Writing a division algorithm anchor

We spent as much time as we possibly could on division, primarily working in math workshop groups so that I could work on reteaching and enriching in small groups. We started out our division unit by making this little chart in our notebooks.

As time goes on, my students are ready to use the algorithm with support from me. Then we multiply one ten by the number of students to see that we have used three tens. In our algorithm, we show that each child gets one ten by writing a one above the tens place in the dividend.

You can download the template and word problems FREE here! Next, we divvy up the ones. This shows that we now have eleven ones.

I circulate around the room to monitor student progress. We place the three below the four in the tens place and subtract to see how many tens we have left one. We made a foldable with examples of what you might do with the remainders.

This reflects thinking from prior grades, and even though we have worked with dividing to get decimal quotients, some students have a hard time moving past the misconception "the big number goes in the house". Which number represents the dividend? We did two really fun activities during independent work We needed a quick way to review division and get into the division mindset!

I make sure to address this misunderstanding right at the beginning of the lesson. Guided Practice Interactive Modeling and Mathematical Discourse I use the text book as a jumping off point for this lesson. Each tab has a word problem example under the flap. Earlier in the year, I introduced fractions as division notation when playing a math game online. In my classroom, we break out the funny money and work some simple problems like this: I draw attention to the fact that students might think it looks wrong to have the 3 in the dividend place with the 4 is in the divisor place.

Unsubscribe at any time. A real-world problem is provided: This one gives them so much division practice that is all real-world and incredibly engaging, if I do say so myself. Throughout the interactive modeling, I focus on identifying the dividend and the divisor, then placing them in the correct places in the division notation.

It was so much fun to see what they came up with. Subscribe to get teaching tips, lesson ideas, and more!

The other independent work project we did was actually slightly different than what is pictured here because we did it with a Christmas Tree! In our algorithm, we drop down the one in the ones place and look down at the eleven.

This is a picture of my teacher notebook that I projected using the document camera while the students made their own version in their notebooks. The division algorithm is a great time-saver, espe-cially when the number being divided is much larger, such as 5.
